Playstation 5 UI is Going to Receive a Complete Overhaul

We got our first look at the Playstation 5 console design last week during their reveal event, but we didn’t get to see everything about the console. One thing that was teased but not completely shown off was the Playstation 5 UI, and it looked very different from what’s come before. It turns out that the system’s UI is going to be completely overhauled according to Playstation VP of UX Design, Matt MacLaurin.

The Verge reports that MacLaurin teased this UI change in a LinkedIn thread, saying “As it’s UI it’s practical first, but it’s a whole new visual language and a complete rearchitecting of the user interface.” He went on to say that the UI is “more subtle than flashy, but no pixel is untouched.” MacLaurin went on to say that we’ll be seeing the Playstation 5 UI soon, but did not clarify exactly how soon that will be.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Microsoft, which appears to be taking a different approach with the UI for the Xbox Series X. According to Tom Warren from The Verge, Microsoft is instead choosing to keep the UI for their next-generation console very similar to the one that already exists on the Xbox One. He says that their focus is on “optimizing its existing Xbox One dashboard for the upcoming Xbox Series X” with “enhancements and updates being made before the new console launch.” This is all with the goal of keeping it as familiar as possible for users that are transitioning from Xbox One.

If the small tease we got during the reveal event last week is any indication, the Playstation 5 UI is sure to look pretty nice. Here’s to hoping that we don’t have to wait too long for it to make its grand debut.
