Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is a Rhythm Game

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory has been announced today for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This new title is a rhythm game, a first for the series, and will be released this year. It was announced in a Kingdom Hearts 2020 trailer released on the Japanese Square Enix YouTube page that highlighted the 2020 plan for the series.

The trailer showed Sora, Donald, and Goofy in their original Kingdom Hearts outfits moving along a music track and attacking enemies as the player hit the notes on beat. Based off the footage, it looks like the song that you’ll be playing will be based off whatever world you’re currently visiting. Some of the worlds that were shown in the trailer were Olympus Coliseum, Agrabah, Destiny Islands, and Twilight Town.

Melody of Memory has a Japanese website that offers a few more details. Kingdom Hearts fan site kh13 received translations of the website from Twitter user @aitaikimochi. They reveal that the game will feature online play, four different play styles, and 140 songs.

At the end of the trailer there was a short tease of the game’s story. This part of the trailer was running on the same engine as Kingdom Hearts III and showed Xehanort in Radiant Garden, as well as Kairi engaging in combat with someone wearing an Organization XIII coat.

The Kingdom Hearts 2020 trailer also brought the announcement that the Kingdom Hearts III soundtrack will be released this year. Fans have wanted a soundtrack for Kingdom Hearts III to be released ever since the game came out, so the news of its impending release is sure to please them.

Gameplay of the upcoming mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road was shown as well, in addition its release date. Dark Road is a mobile game in the same vein as Kingdom Hearts Union Cross. It tells the story of series antagonist Master Xehanort before he became the villain that fans know him to be. The game will be released on June 22 for iOS and Android.

Square Enix also teased the second phase of the Kingdom Hearts series in the 2020 trailer. This phase includes Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind, Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road, and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. There are more empty spaces shown, but what they will be remains mystery. Fans certainly have plenty to look forward to in regards to the future of the series.
