Ubisoft Next-Gen Games Will Launch at $60 This Fall

When it was revealed a few weeks ago that the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of NBA 2K21 would launch at $70, it was widely assumed that all publishers would follow suit with their next-generation releases. Ubisoft will be staying put at the standard $60 price tag, however, at least for the time being.

IGN is reporting that during Ubisoft’s Q1 2020-2021 earnings call, CEO Yves Guillemot said that “For the Christmas games, we plan to come with the same price as the previous generation of consoles. That’s what we’re focused on at the moment.” That means that the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which launch in October and November respectively, will retail for $60. Guillemot later reiterated the $60 price for the publisher’s games through the end of 2020, but did not discuss what prices for its next-gen games will look like in 2021 and beyond.

Ubisoft’s fluid pricing strategy is also on display with Far Cry 6, which launches on February 18, 2021. The game will retail for $60 on PS4 and Xbox One, but buying those versions of the game will allow a free upgrade to the next-generation version within the same console family.

The cost of next-generation games has become a bit of a hot topic, but when everything is taken into consideration, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Video game prices increased to $60 in 2005 and remained static for 15 years, despite inflation and the ever-increasing expenses of game development.
