State of Decay 3 Revealed at Xbox Games Showcase

Xbox just wrapped up their Xbox Games Showcase event which premiered a slew of first-party games, as well as third party exclusives. One of which is a new entry into an existing franchise from Undead Labs, State of Decay 3.

The trailer for State of Decay 3 really did not reveal a lot about the game. It opens with presumably one of the main characters in a snowy environment, sitting around a campfire. Then cuts to a shot of them walking through a forest, and encountering a zombie dear consuming the corpse of some animal. I would assume it will play similarly to the previous State of Decay games, with added features for Xbox Series X.

At launch, State of Decay 2 didn’t quite find its footing. It was littered with bugs and was considered fairly repetitive. Two years later, with multiple patches and DLC’s, the game has become one of the more Xbox’s more successful exclusives. Hopefully, State of Decay 3 will learn from its predecessors and be a hit at launch. Undead Labs was acquired by Microsoft back in 2018, after previously developing the pervious two State of Decay games.

The approach to how Xbox interacts with its first-party studios is rather hands-off. or so we have heard thanks to a GamesIndustry.biz article published earlier this month, where Matt Booty, Head of Xbox Games Studios, spoke about what Xbox’s first-party studious are doing.

No release date for State of Decay 3 was given, leading me to believe it might be early in development. The Xbox Series X is set to launch Holiday 2020. During the event today, 343 revealed the first look at Halo Infinite campaign gameplay, which you can watch here. You can also watch the full Xbox Games Showcase presentation here.
