The Last of Us Part II Might be Releasing in February 2020

Some of the biggest games still in development are quickly getting release dates. A couple of weeks ago, it was announced that Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding will be releasing November 8, 2019. During Microsoft’s E3 2019 conference last week, CD Projekt Red revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 would release on April 16, 2020. Even Square Enix finally put a release date on the Final Fantasy VII Remake, for March 3, 2020.

Now, we may have just gotten a tentative release window for Naughty Dog’s hugely-anticipated title, The Last of Us Part II, as growing rumors point to a February 2020 window.

The mounting rumors surrounding The Last of Us Part II’s release have come from a couple different sources lately. The first being Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who revealed on Twitter back in May that the game might be slated for an early 2020 release, possibly due to Death Stranding’s fall 2019 release.

Schreier’s statement is also in line with a leak about the game’s release date that came out in the beginning of May, in which a Peruvian video game retailer listed the game’s release for October 2019.

Fast forward to this past weekend and the reality of a 2020 release seems to have been hinted at by Ashley Johnson, who is the voice actor for The Last of Us + The Last of Us Part II’s protagonist, Ellie. During this interview, which you can view below, when Johnson is asked about the game’s release, it sounds as though she’s about to say “February”, but is quickly cut off by the interviewer. You can hear it around the 1:07 mark.

Over the weekend, VP of Naughty Dog and The Last of Us Part II’s director Neil Druckmann took a comical approach to all the rumors, joking on Twitter that each time someone asks about the game’s release date, the game gets pushed back five minutes.

Though a February release is growing more likely, take these rumors with a grain of salt, as nothing is official until confirmation from Sony and Naughty Dog.

In the meantime, we’ve gathered everything you need to know about The Last of Us Part II. Check it out here.
