Insomniac Games on Resistance 4, “It’s a Longshot”

The Resistance series has been, rather contently, confined to the days of PlayStation 3, with the first entry Fall of Man being a launch title for the console back in 2006, and its sequels following in 2008 and 2011. Even today, the trilogy has yet to be remastered for the PlayStation 4, and there are foreseeable plans to do so. But what about a fourth installment in the series? Speaking to Finder, Insomniac Games’ community director James Stevenson explained that while continuing the series is unlikely, it’s not entirely impossible, either.

“It feels like a longshot to me. But I have learned over the years to never say never,” Stevenson said. “I think there are a lot of people out there that have fond memories of a Resistance game from the PS3 era, but yeah, never say never, it’s just that we have no plans to make another Resistance game in the future.”

When asked about the possibility of letting another developer handle a core Resistance game, Stevenson admitted that he is unsure about this and said it will ultimately be up to Sony. “It’s actually Sony that owns the IP and owns that universe. So I guess if they were really passionate about making Resistance 4 and we couldn’t or didn’t want to do it, Sony could totally engage another developer.”

Many fans probably remember that other developers were involved with the series at one point, as Bend Studio made the PSP version, Resistance: Retribution, which released in 2009; and nStigate Games was responsible for Burning Skies on the PS Vita which released in 2012.
