Sony Explains That…Interesting E3 Show: “We Wanted to Inject Some Drama”

There is no denying Sony’s E3 2018 show put its most heavy-hitting upcoming titles in the spotlight, plus a few surprises. While we saw new gameplay trailers from some of the biggest exclusives in development for the PS4, that E3 show was one of Sony’s weirdest in recent memory.

Sony opted for a more intimate setting at E3 2018, one that resembled a location from The Last of Us Part II. Then, there was a sizable break in the show, as attendees had to physically get up and move locations. That’s fine, if not a bit annoying. But what slid Sony’s show into the “weird” category, is not a single developer from its major studios took the stage to explain exactly what we were watching on the screen.

Ghost of Tsushima

No one from Naughty Dog to address the new gameplay features in The Last of Us Part II. No one from Sucker Punch to set the scene for its lengthy Ghost of Tsushima trailer. No one from Kojima Productions to unpack…well, everything about Death Stranding. Not to mention, Remedy’s new IP Control went by almost too quickly to process. Instead, we were treated to a little over an hour of trailer after trailer after trailer, which garnered several mixed reactions online. Granted, the developers sat down in a series of interviews on the E3 show floor, but this was largely missed for those who weren’t tuned into the E3 live streams.

Now in an interview with The Guardian, Simon Rutter, Sony Europe’s chief operating officer has broken the company’s silence regarding mixed sentiments about the show:

People have really enjoyed the games themselves, and appreciated the quality of what we showed. There was also some appreciation of what we were trying to do with the construction of the event, with some criticism as to how that actually flowed, the pacing and the logistics. For the last three years, we’ve been trying to inject a bit of drama and theatrics into the proceedings, to make it more than a simple presentation. We tried to evoke the spirit of the games.

Do you think Sony succeeded with this? What are your thoughts of its E3 show?
