The Walking Dead: The Final Season is Back in Development

Today Skybound Entertainment provided an update on the fate of Telltale’s The Walking Dead: The Final Season. For those who missed the news, or who simply need a refresher, Telltale Games unexpectedly closed its doors a couple months ago, laying off its staff without severance pay. With many fans and industry leaders rallied around Telltale developers, there was still one question lingering in the back of people’s mind: what, if anything, would happen to The Walking Dead?

At the time the studio closed, only one of the four scheduled episodes had been released for The Final Season. Episode two, “Suffer the Children”, released shortly after the news of the layoffs broke, but the fate of the remaining two episodes remained unclear.

Skybound Entertainment has been working to take control of The Walking Dead from Telltale games since the studio closed. Now, the company has released a statement detailing the future of The Final Season.

The Walking Dead’s social media manager, Johnny O’Dell, took to Skybound’s blog to explain that episodes three and four of The Final Season, “Broken Toys” and “Take Us Back”, respectively, was delayed after Telltale had to stop development; but now, many of the “talented, passionate team members who originally worked on the game are resuming development efforts today!”

Skybound expects to be announcing release dates for the remaining episodes soon, but warns that “previous seasons of the game may be unavailable to purchase for a few days as we transition.” Fans shouldn’t worry, though, as everything will be back online as soon as possible.

Players who’ve already purchased The Final Season won’t have to buy it again, and the upcoming episodes will be available for download when they are released.
