Anthem Executive Producer Denies Delay Rumor

A rumor that was spreading about a possible delay for Anthem has been squashed by the game’s executive producer.

Late last week, after correctly predicting that Sony would announce that it’s skipping E3 2019, reddit user RuthenicCookie began to discuss some supposed PS5 “leaks.” PlayStation LifeStyle has a great article on the whole situation, where RuthenicCookie claims to know the price, launch window, and technical specifications of Sony’s next home console.

During their discussion with other reddit users regarding Sony’s E3 announcement, RuthenicCookie also claimed that Anthem would not be ready for its currently scheduled February 22, 2019 release date. The game was apparently “a mess” on current generation consoles, and BioWare was supposedly testing the game on the PlayStation 5 development kit. Many people in the thread figured that a delay for Anthem would give more credibility to RuthenicCookie’s claims about the PS5, but it looks like EA caught wind of the speculation and decided to put an end to it. BioWare’s Mark Darrah, who serves as executive producer on Anthem, reconfirmed the game’s release date through a tweet.

Anthem was originally scheduled to release this year, but back in January, EA announced that the game was being pushed back to early 2019. The publisher told the Wall Street Journal that the new launch window would be quieter than Q4 2018, and thus would give the game more exposure. It remains to be seen if EA’s logic was sound, however. Many titles likely skipped this holiday season to avoid Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption II, which made $725 million in three days, but created a pretty busy Q1 2019 in the process. Such titles include Kingdom Hearts III, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry 5, which are all launching in the first three months of next year. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, which shares many gameplay similarities with Anthem, will launch just three weeks after BioWare’s multiplayer RPG.

Assuming Mark Darrah’s statement holds true, Anthem will be available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on February 22, 2019. EA Access members on Xbox One and PC will get a 10-hour trial that will become available on February 15.
