Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a “Standalone Game” (Updated)

Update: It appears that the conversation regarding Marvel’s Spider Man: Miles Morales has prompted Insomniac Games to release a statement. In a tweet, the studio says that the PS5 title is a “standalone game” and more will be revealed “at a future date.”

Original Story: There was a little bit of confusion when Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was announced for a Holiday 2020 release during the PS5 games reveal stream. Was it a sequel to the PS4 game, or something else? We now have a little bit of clarification.

Simon Rutter, PlayStation Head of Europe Business Operations and Executive Vice President at Sony, said the following to The Telegraph:

“I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game. There’s a substantial Miles Morales component–which is the expansion element–but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PlayStation 5 technology and features.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

So while we now know that this isn’t a full-fledged follow-up to Marvel’s Spider-Man, which seemed a bit optimistic to begin with, we still aren’t completely sure how this will be delivered to customers. It’s safe to assume that a full-priced version will be released on PS5 with the base game and Miles expansion content, but how will owners of the original PS4 version play it? Will they have the option to buy the new content as DLC, or will they have to double dip? We’ll find out at some point in the coming months.
