Horizon Forbidden West Targeting a 2021 Launch

Sony ended its PS5 reveal stream last week with a quick look at Horizon Forbidden West, which is arguably the biggest game announced for the console thus far. Today, the official PlayStation YouTube channel released a new video which provides additional insight into the highly-anticipated sequel.

Game director Mathijs de Jonge starts by saying that Guerrilla is using the PS5 hardware to make the world of Horizon “more detailed, and more vibrant, and more immersive.” The console’s SSD will allow for near-instantaneous load times, and fast travel and checkpoint restarts will be “super fast.” Additionally, players won’t have to sit through a long initial load when they start up the game.

de Jonge also explains that the “forbidden west” in the title refers to the game’s new setting, which spans from Utah to the Pacific Ocean in a distant-future United States. The game’s map will be “a bit bigger” than Horizon Zero Dawn’s, and players will now be able to swim underwater in lakes and rivers. They can also expect to encounter “dozens” of new machines, as well as new tribes, in Aloy’s latest adventure.

The video closes out with de Jonge revealing that Guerrilla is hoping to release Horizon Forbidden West in 2021. A variety of other PS5 games have also been confirmed for release next year, including Hitman 3, Resident Evil Village, and GhostWire: Tokyo.
