E3 2018: Here’s Your First Look at The Last of Us Part II Gameplay

Sony kicked off its E3 2018 showcase with a much-anticipated look at The Last of Us Part II in the form of lengthy gameplay, and it went from sweet kisses to knife kills real quick. It opens up with Ellie at a party, and she is then pulled into a slow dance with a love interest. Based on the events that follow, it might be safe to assume said love interest is dead.

The sweet scene quickly changes to an intense sequence of gameplay that has Ellie slicing throats, throwing bottles, and dodging bullets. In other words, it feels like players are being welcomed back home into the gritty and dangerous world of The Last of Us.

Many elements of gameplay are back, including the standard menu of weapon items, where players can store guns, medical kits, and machetes; and Naughty Dog showed that we’re still be able to run backwards and turn around to dodge enemies. We also see some new ones, like Ellie taking out bandits from under a car, being able to lose enemies in tall grass, and throwing bottles at enemies while running.

Months ago, Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann explained The Last of Us Part II will be the counter-story to the first game, and will primarily feature themes of hate and revenge. We got more of a glimpse of that, seeing how Ellie looks ruthless throughout the trailer’s entirety. Finally, the trailer ends with Ellie back at the party, and ending the kiss.
