Destruction AllStars Gets A State of Play and Release Date

Last week we met some of the characters, and now we finally get to see some actual gameplay of Destruction AllStars. Sony has released a new State of Play dedicated to their upcoming vehicle combat game Destruction AllStars that finally gives us a real good look at what exactly playing the game is like, as well as tells us when we can start playing the game. Destruction AllStars will be available on February 2nd, and will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers from then until April 5th.

Gameplay in Destruction AllStars sees you choose one of the 16 characters to use in the match, with each one having their own hero vehicle and hero ability. Upon starting the match, you hop in a vehicle and get to destroying your opponents. There are three different vehicle types in each arena: one focused on speed, one focused on strength, and one that’s focused on control. Vehicles are designed to be disposable, so if yours is destroyed, you can easily swap into another one.

Hero abilities and vehicle abilities charge up by wrecking opponents, dodging vehicles, or collecting pickups that are scattered across the arena. Hero abilities for Lupita and Shift were shown off to demonstrate this. Lupita’s vehicle ability leaves a flaming trail behind her as she drives, and hero ability does the same with her footsteps when she’s out of her vehicle. On the other hand, Shift turns invisible when using his ability on foot or behind the wheel.

When it comes to on foot traversal, you’re able to do different moves such as vaulting, wall running, and wall ricochets. While in Hero mode, all characters move faster and are able to double jump. Perhaps the most important traversal move is the dodge. When dodging an opponent’s vehicle, you’ll be able to grab on and either take it from them or wreck it.

All of this will be crucial to success in the different game modes that Destruction AllStars has. We already knew about these modes, as well as the customization that will be available, but Lucid Games offered a bit more info about some of them. Cosmetics can be purchased with either AllStar Coins or Destruction Points. AllStar Coins are earned by playing online and gaining experience. Destruction Points are only available for purchase through the PlayStation Store, though players will be able to earn them in game through daily and weekly challenges later this year. All purchasable content is purely cosmetic and offers no advantage in game.

The Challenge Series mode is similar to what you would get from Arcade mode in a fighting game. Each character has their own challenge series that culminates in a match against their rival. These can only be unlocked with Destruction Points, meaning players will have to spend real money to play this content, though how much they cost wasn’t specified.

Lucid Games plans to keep supporting Destruction AllStars after launch, with new Challenge Series’, characters, modes, and refreshed playlists being added after launch.

Destruction AllStars has had a long road to launch. It was first announced at the PS5 reveal event and then disappeared from the spotlight for a few months. It briefly resurfaced in the PS5 UI reveal before it was announced that the game would be delayed from the November launch of the PS5 to February. Now the game’s launch is finally in sight.
