Watch the New Trailer for Detroit: Become Human

Quantic Dream’s Detroit: Become Human made an appearance at Sony’s showcase during Paris Games Week this morning. The new trailer offered a more intense look at the futuristic city of Detroit- a city dominated by androids that live amongst the average citizens. Players will take on the role of an android named Kara, as she (it?) navigates the chaotic landscape of Detroit in an attempt to make it her own. In doing so, Kara’s actions will have long-lasting consequences that not only affect her own life, but the lives of everyone in the city. The game will also revolve around two more androids named Markus and Connor.

A new look at Detroit: Become Human wasn’t a huge surprise today. Quite honestly, we would have been shocked if we hadn’t seen it. This new IP has been somewhat of an elusive project since it was announced two years ago, near the end of 2015. One moment, a fair amount of information will be revealed about the game, detailing characters, a bit of gameplay, and the androids’ unique perception of the world, and then we won’t hear about it for another year. Seeing Detroit in inconsistent spurts like this has kept the momentum for its impending release pretty stagnant.

The new trailer that was shown during Sony’s showcase today did well to build off the last two gameplay trailers from E3 2016 and E3 2017. We see Kara working as caretaker for a single father and his daughter, Alice, who’s made an appearance in a previous Detroit trailer.

Things escalate quickly for Kara when she is caught looking in the father’s private box, only to find a weapon. After we learn the father is abusive to Alice (and Kara), the trailer then goes on to highlight various narrative options to show how the situation could have played out differently.

Quantic Dream’s games have always been ambitious in terms of how far the narrative branches out in order to offer players a multitude of outcomes. With Detroit: Become Human, however, the developer is pushing that ambition even further to the point where each decision, either directly or indirectly, affects what will happen next.

Detroit: Become Human will be released in Spring 2018 exclusively for PlayStation 4. Check out the trailer from Paris Games Week below.
