Typhoon Studios revealed its new indie sci-fi adventure game, Journey to the Savage Planet at the Game Awards 2018 last night. You can watch the teaser trailer below.
Journey to the Savage Planet is the first project of startup developer, Typhoon Studios. It was created by Ubisoft Montreal’s Alex Hutchinson (director of Assassin’s Creed 3 and Far Cry 4), Yassine Riahi and Reid Schneider, both formerly of Batman Arkham Origins studio, Warner Bros. Montreal.
The trailer didn’t reveal much, just that it will be a funny, first person, sci-fi adventure set on an alien planet. The player works for ‘Kindred Aerospace’, the “fourth best interstellar exploration company” — voted for by its press team. The aim is to explore the colourful alien world to see if its habitable for human life. However, the ‘heroic expedition’ doesn’t quite go to plan. The camera pans around to a dead astronaught, just outside of their lander after slipping on a banana skin.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Alex Hutchinson said.
“Most trailers end with some kind of hero shot, ours is the opposite. Our guy here literally fell out of the door and died. We’re trying as well to establish this is a game with a sense of humour.”
He continued:
“You’ve been sent by Kindred Aerospace, who are very, very proud of being the fourth best space exploration company. And they apologise for budget cuts which meant you don’t have any gear with you. Or fuel to get home.”
As an indie game, Typhoon is hoping to occupy a similar space in gaming like Hellblade. Therefore, it will include a lot of exploration from the start, but with a much shorter story. Hutchinson also confirmed that he isn’t a fan of “narrative in video games”. So it’s probably safe to expect that scripted narratives won’t get in the way of exploration.
Other major reveals from the award show included Obsidian Entertainment’s reveal of its sci-fi RPG game, The Outer Worlds.
Journey to the Savage Planet will be released on PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
