The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel Will Revisit the Same Hyrule Map

One of the biggest moments of E3 2019 came during Nintendo’s Direct, when the company surprised everyone by revealing that a sequel to the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is in development. The teaser trailer was short, its tone unexpectedly (yet amazingly) dark; but aside from a few quick shots and an appearance by Zelda and Link, we know extremely little about this sequel. The fact it’s even a sequel at all is noteworthy, because direct continuations in the Legend of Zelda series aren’t really a thing.

Thanks to a recent interview from Game Informer with Breath of the Wild’s producer, Eiji Aonuma, we got more details about Nintendo’s inspiration to make a sequel. During the conversation, it was also revealed that the second game will take place in the same Hyrule map that’s featured in Breath of the Wild.

“One of the reasons we wanted to create a continuation,” Aonuma says, “was because I wanted to revisit that Hyrule again and use that world again, while incorporating new gameplay and new story.” When speaking to additional content that was released for Breath of the Wild, Aonuma says DLC is something that players can expect the development team to explore going forward. “I really like the idea of having DLC or anything coming after the main game. People play the game longer and enjoy the game a lot deeper.”

Aonuma also confirmed that director Hidemaro Fujibayashi will be making a return for the sequel.

As of now, it’s way too early for information about a release date or window for the second Breath of the Wild game. Be sure to check out the full interview Game Informer conducted with Aonuma here.
