This morning, Nintendo released a new trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury that gave us our first proper look at what exactly the new expansion is going to be. In this new add-on for the game, Bowser has gone out of control, causing Mario to have to team up with Bowser Jr. to put a stop to him.
The trailer shows that Bowser Jr. is able to assist Mario in taking out enemies, as well as reveal items that are hidden in walls with his paintbrush. It’s not entirely clear though if Bowser Jr. can be controlled by a second-player or if he is only an NPC. When Bowser appears in his new form, he’s incredibly large and menacing. His appearance is accompanied by a change in the weather, different music, and obstacles that he himself causes such as raining fireballs. A new version of the Bell power-up is here though that allows Mario to turn into a giant version of Cat Mario in order to take on Bowser.
There will be two new Amiibos available at the same time as the game as well for Cat Mario and Cat Peach. Each of them will provide in-game enhancements in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. The previously released Bowser and Bowser Jr. Amiibos will be made available for purchase again, with both of them having special features in the Bowser’s Fury expansion.
In addition to the new trailer, Nintendo also announced a new Mario themed Switch console. It features a red and blue color scheme to match the look of the iconic plumber. This edition of the console will come with a carrying case as well, something that you would normally have to buy separately. It costs $299.99 and will be available at select retailers starting February 12th, the same day as the game.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury was first announced as part of a special Nintendo Direct last year that celebrated Mario’s 35th anniversary, but this is the first time we’ve gotten to see actual gameplay of the new expansion. During this Direct, we also got the announcement of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario 35, and Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.
