Sony Officially Announces Next Generation PSVR
Sony has announced that they are working on a next-generation PSVR headset for PlayStation 5. Though the new VR device won’t be releasing in 2021, developers already have their hands on it and have started making games for it.
The new PSVR will enable the “ultimate entertainment experience” thanks to major leaps in performance and interactivity. “We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input.”
One area of innovation that Sony pointed out is their new VR controller. It will incorporate some features of the stellar DualSense controller, as well as have improved ergonomics. While they don’t mention any features in particular, it wouldn’t be too surprising if it featured the haptic vibrations or some version of the adaptive triggers that the DualSense have.
In an interview with GQ, Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan spoke a little more about the new headset. When asked about what’s changed from the current headset to the new one, Ryan offered a bit of insight about what we can expect from it, stating that it will be a “completely new VR format for PS5.”
”We think there are two themes that you’re going to see: us capturing the technological progress that has taken place since the present VR system came to market and a considerable amount of lessons learned.”
One such lesson is the way you connect the new headset to the console. Sony’s new PSVR will still need to be connected to the PS5, but it will only require one cord to be plugged in. This is sure to make many players happy since the current version of the headset requires multiple cords and a transfer device to work.
Today’s announcement comes after many vague statements and patents that hinted at the possibility of a next-gen PSVR headset coming to the PS5. It’s nice to finally get solid confirmation the Sony will be continuing the pursue a future in the VR space, since the field is full of potential for new and innovative gameplay experiences.
