Rumor: Titanfall Battle Royale Game to Launch Next Week

A very interesting rumor has been making the rounds on the internet today: A battle royale game set in the Titanfall universe is going to be revealed and released next week.

The talk started this morning with a tweet from eSports insider Rod Breslau, who claimed that sources of his have played Apex Legends, a free-to-play Titanfall hero shooter/battle royale game for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. He also mentions that the game will be announced and released on Monday, February 4:

Breslau’s follow-up tweets provided additional details about the game. Apparently it will feature different playable heroes/classes with unique abilities, a 60-player server cap where players can form teams of three, and loot boxes that will only contain cosmetic items. It will run on a modified version of Valve’s Source Engine, which also powered the first two Titanfall games. Players will not be able to pilot the Titan mechs that have become staples of the series, however.

About an hour after the rumor began to spread, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier chimed in and confirmed what Breslau shared about the game:

It seems crazy to release another battle royale game when nothing has managed to put a dent in Fortnite so far, but the Titanfall series’ fantastic parkour and shooting gameplay may help Apex Legends stand out a bit. It’s also possible that EA will reveal the game with a trailer during the Super Bowl tomorrow, which would give it a lot of attention for its supposed launch on Monday.

The Titanfall franchise has been dormant since 2016’s Titanfall 2, which didn’t meet sales expectations. EA bought the series’ developer, Respawn, a year later. The studio has a third, more traditional Titanfall game in development and will be releasing Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order later this year.
