Well. This isn’t good. Major spoilers for The Last of Us Part II were leaked over the weekend on YouTube, showing off gameplay footage, pivotal cutscenes, and the entire plot. The ending, unfortunately, was also leaked. Spoilers will not be included in this article.
Sony and Naughty Dog have not commented on this massive leak, but Sony has since had the video removed from YouTube. Although the original video is gone, the spoilers are still up on an active Resetera thread, which you can check out (at your own risk) here.
Naughty Dog seems to be going through it at the moment. The Last of Us Part II was recently delayed indefinitely due to the spread of COVID-19, and right now there is no update on the game’s new release date or, even more broadly, a release window. The indefinite delay also came on the heels of reports saying that crunch culture at Naughty Dog is severe.
Jonathan Cooper, who is a former animator at the studio corroborated the story of its serious crunch culture in a lengthy Twitter thread, explaining that gameplay animators “crunched more than I’ve ever seen”. On the subject of the game’s delays, Cooper wrote that “a more senior team would have shipped TLOU2 a year ago.”
It’s unclear what the “right” move is for Naughty Dog right now- whether it’s to release the entire game digitally or simply double down on the damage control. This story will be updated when there is a statement from Sony or Naughty Dog.
The Last of Us Part II aside, the good news is that games like Ghost of Tsushima and Cyberpunk 2077 are still on track for their June 26 and September 17 releases, respectively; and PlayStation 5 is still on track for a Holiday 2020 launch.
