E3 2018: Ghost of Tsushima Gameplay Finally Revealed

As expected, we got a brand new look at Sucker Punch’s new IP Ghost of Tsushima during Sony’s E3 2018 showcase tonight. The open-world action game was first revealed during Paris Games Week in October last year. Following the reveal, we got a small look at it during PlayStation Experience, but since then the samurai adventure title has been under-wraps.

The nearly nine minute gameplay trailer that debuted tonight gives us a sprawling look at the landscape of Japan during the Mongol invasion in 1274. We also got a better look at what we can expect in terms of combat in Ghost of Tsushima, with protagonist Jin Sakai quickly taking down a slew of enemies with his katana. There’s even a slow-motion sequence near the end to make it more beautiful.

During the gameplay debut, we were also introduced to another samurai named Masako, who will fight alongside Jin to defend Japan from the Mongol invaders. According to Sucker Punch, Masako’s own tragic history will “drive a wedge in her relationship with Jin”, and we see this spill out near the end of the trailer when they engage in a duel.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sucker Punch Producer, Brian Fleming, explained the foundation of Ghost of Tsushima:

We’re telling an original story set in the world of feudal Japan—a time of warfare, chaos, and violent change. You play as Jin Sakai, a powerful samurai warrior whose adventure draws on Japanese history and the iconic traditions of samurai cinema to craft a gorgeous tale of revenge, empowerment, and hope.

Sounds good to me.

Ghost of Tsushima is still in early development, and right now there is no release date for the game. When it does launch, though, it will be exclusively on PlayStation 4. Keep up with more E3 coverage right here.
