E3 2018: Everything You Need to Know about Fallout 76 So Far

Fallout 76 was revealed at the end of May, and we finally got a better look at the game during Bethesda’s E3 2018 showcase when Bethesda Games Studios’ Todd Howard took the stage. Based on the teaser trailer we’ve already seen of Fallout 76, in addition to the information revealed tonight, here’s everything you need to know about it so far:

Background:

Set in the sprawling hills of West Virginia, Fallout 76 will serve as a prequel to all of the other Fallout games, and is four times (!) the size of Fallout 4. The game opens on Reclamation Day. As a survivor, you’ve spent twenty-five years underground, and are one of the first people to emerge from Vault 76 to explore an untamed wasteland. The Vault was initially built to commemorate America’s tricentennial.

Gameplay/What’s New?:

Fallout 76 is played entirely online. Howard described it as “softcore survival”, where players explore a wasteland littered with new monsters and unique objectives. Players will be able to join friends whenever they want, and are able to take progression with them no matter when they play. Players will also be able to build wherever they want, and take it with you.

Howard explained the game uses all new rendering and lighting technology to bring the world to life in a way that hasn’t been previously seen in Fallout games. Distinct weather patterns will also be found through out the world to affect gameplay experience.

“There is No “I” in Nuclear Wasteland”:

During Bethesda’s showcase, Howard addressed the proverbial elephant in the room concerning Fallout 76 being entirely online. It’s no secret Bethesda has built its reputation being a powerhouse of open-world titles that are driven by quality, single-player narratives. The developer is taking a leap of faith with Fallout 76, and it wants its devoted fans to be open to the experience.  “We’re going to build it together,” Howard said. Fallout 76 is in it for the long run.

Release Date:

Fallout 76 will be released on November 14, 2018 for PC, Xbox One and PS4. This post will be updated as more is revealed during and after E3.
