Control’s Next-Gen Upgrade Option Ruffles Feathers Online

Remedy Entertainment’s Control will be getting next-gen upgrades for PS5 and Xbox Series X, but fans are less than enthused with how they are being delivered to the supernatural action game.

Last week, the official Control Twitter account announced the Control Ultimate Edition, which will release on Steam on August 27 and two weeks later on PS4, Xbox One, and the Epic Games Store. It will retail for $39.99 and will include the base game, both expansion packs, and all free updates that the game has received since launch.

An FAQ post on publisher 505 Games’ website also explains that the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Control Ultimate Edition will include free next-gen digital upgrades. However, the free upgrade path will not apply to digital purchases of the original version of Control, which released around this time last year.

The response to the upgrade path has been overwhelmingly negative. In replies to the tweet shown above and 505 Games’ similar announcement, fans are decrying the fact that early adopters of the console versions and expansion pass, who dealt with severe performance issues, are being left out in the cold. Many of them point out that they paid $79.99 for the game’s digital deluxe edition at launch, which includes the same content as this new release, but they will not receive a free next-gen upgrade. Others showed a willingness to pay a small fee to upgrade their existing digital copy to a next-gen version, but Remedy and 505 Games have not announced if that will be possible.

The news comes when many publishers have announced that they will provide free next-gen upgrades for their games. When Bethesda Softworks announced the new campaign DLC for DOOM Eternal, it also announced that PS4 and Xbox One owners will be able to upgrade to next-gen versions free of charge. Ubisoft will do the same for Watch Dogs: Legion, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Far Cry 6, and CD Projekt RED will provide a free post-launch upgrade for Cyberpunk 2077.
