Here’s a Look at the Upcoming Game Demon Grade VR

Independent developer Solus Games (Starship Disco) has a new title on its hands that’s as unique as it is innovative. The one-man, California-based developer recently announced the launch of Demon Grade VR, a first-person shooter that’s coming to Oculus Rift, Gear VR, HTC Vive and Google DayDream.

I had my first hands-on experience with different types of VR technology around the show floor at E3 2017. While it was exciting, I noticed that each time I was immersed in a game, whether it was a first person shooter or a platformer, I became dizzy at best. Nauseous at worst. Solus Games is improving on the VR experience as a whole with Demon Grade VR, as the developer has created a new and cutting-edge locomotion technology that helps create a smooth and steady, first-person VR experience. Sans nausea. This is definitely a step in the right direction for VR, seeing as how the tech can be incredibly isolating to people who are unable to handle the quick motion of VR games.

Demon Grade

In Demon Grade VR, players explore dynamically generated levels while fighting demonic enemies that aren’t afraid to fight back. From what we have seen of the game so far, enemies appear slow moving, but that doesn’t mean their attacks are any less damaging. Each level keeps players on their toes, moving and shooting, while simultaneously collecting items known as demon shards. The levels are eerie yet atmospheric, and you only have a small light to see with as a variety of enemies move toward you, materializing behind boxes and around corners. In the event you do get killed, though, you can take comfort in the fact your death wasn’t in vain.

With every restart of Demon Grade, players are able to use the demon shards they’ve collected and put them towards their stats, while also unlocking increasingly powerful weapons for a smoother play through of the level. In relation to some FPS titles that can be punishing if you’re killed and then start you over with nothing, Demon Grade VR is a welcomed breath of fresh air, and Solus Games seems to have found a reasonable balance between player enjoyment, horror, and gameplay. It’s commendable for a one-person studio.

Rico Stenson, Founder of Solus Games had this to say about Demon Grade VR:

As a one-man indie game developer, I’m excited to be at the forefront of VR gaming and I think Demon Grade VR is really fun, creepy, and exciting.  It makes me feel the same way the original Doom did back in the 90’s, but now with high res VR Graphics…I’m also excited to introduce my novel locomotion technology in Demon Grade VR and I think fans are going to appreciate a game that allows for real movement with no motion sickness.  No teleporting, no tunneling, no rails – just real movement.  It’s called virtual reality for a reason and I think Demon Grade VR delivers classic style FPS action, but taken to the next level in VR with natural motion and shooting.”

Demon Grade VR will be released soon for Oculus Rift, Gear VR, HTC Vive and Google DayDream. Keep up with Solus Games on Twitter for more updates!
