The release date for Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II was officially revealed today during PlayStation’s State of Play event, which was streamed online via PlayStation’s various media platforms. The long-awaited sequel was originally announced during PlayStation Experience (PSX) in 2016 with a short teaser trailer. In addition to the release date we got today, we also saw a couple of surprises, like the return of Joel’s brother Tommy, who was running a community of his own in the first game; and possibly a few new ideas of what the narrative of this game entails.
During the State of Play trailer, Ellie appeared to be going on a run with her partner, Dina. After Dina finds herself battling a clicker, the trailer becomes interspersed with moments of stealth, horseback riding, and ultimately, an ambush.
When that first teaser for The Last of Us Part II was revealed at PSX, Ellie (now famously) vowed, “I’m going to find, and I’m going to kill…every last one of them.” After the trailer’s release, speculation swarmed that Joel was potentially dead, and Ellie was going to hunt down the people responsible for his death. But after this latest glimpse at the game, it looks as though Ellie is driven by revenge because something happened to Dina.
Though bits of the story are still shrouded in mystery, one thing is certain: the environments are stunningly well-built. There were several moments in this State of Play trailer where the world looks more expansive than we’ve seen in the first game, to the point where its design almost has an open world vibe to it; or at least offering more freedom and player exploration than the first game.
The Last of Us Part II releases exclusively for PlayStation 4 on February 21, 2020. If you need to catch up with news about the game, we’ve detailed everything you need to know so far.
