The Last of Us Part II Has Sold Over 4 Million Copies

It only launched a week ago, but Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II has shattered a pretty lofty PS4 sales record. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, SIE Senior Vice President Eric Lempel announced that the game has sold over 4 million copies since its launch on June 19, making it the “the fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive ever.” The previous record was held by Marvel’s Spider-Man, which sold over 3 million copies in three days when it launched in 2018.

The blog post also contains a message to fans from Game Director and Naughty Dog Vice President Neil Druckmann:

We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar.

The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog. We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone.

The Last of Us Part II

The Last of Us Part II’s success does come with some controversy, however. While the game’s critic score sits at a 94 on Metacritic, its user score sits at a lowly 4.6. Numerous users, who criticize the story and claim that the game caters to “social justice warriors,” have review bombed the game with a 0 score. The game’s rating on the PlayStation Store, which requires customers to own the game to rate it, tells a different story: with over 10,000 total ratings, the game sits at at a four star average out of five.

Our very own Tori Morrow reviewed The Last of Us Part II earlier this week. She praised the game’s storytelling and new mechanics, but took issue with the world design and some monotonous gameplay sections in the first half.
