The Game Awards 2018: Teasers, Rumors, and Confirmed Announcements

The 2018 Video Game Awards will take place live this Thursday, and host Geoff Keighley has already confirmed that more than ten new games will be announced during the show. Those unknown games aside, several developers have already announced their games will be shown during gaming’s biggest night, either in the form of gameplay trailers, full-length cinematic trailers, and teasers. Here is what we can expect during the show, as well as one game we won’t be seeing on the stage.

Confirmed Announcements & Trailers:

RAGE 2

RAGE 2

RAGE 2 made its premiere during the Bethesda E3 2018 conference back in June, and now we’ll be getting a brand new look at the game during The Game Awards on Thursday. RAGE 2‘s The official Twitter account for RAGE 2 made the announcement yesterday, and even threw in some light humor by asking fans to consider the game for best “Post-Post-Apocalyptic Western”. We don’t know any further details, or even what to expect from the new trailer, but a release date for the game is not unlikely, given that RAGE 2 is scheduled to release in early 2019.

Anthem

Anthem

Since its announcement during E3 2017, there has been no shortage of news regarding BioWare’s latest project Anthem. Now the developer has announced there will be a brand new trailer appearing at The Game Awards. In the teaser for the show, we get an up-close look at a few components of the Javelin suits.

Anthem will release for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on February 22, 2019.

The Avengers Project

Hollywood’s most recognizable directors, brothers Anthony and Joe Russo are heading to The Game Awards, and I’m pretty sure it’s not to announce the next Black Panther film.

In January 2017, Marvel and game developer Square Enix announced a “multi-year, multi-game” partnership and released an announcement trailer for The Avengers Project. We haven’t heard much about the game since then, but with the Russo brothers at The Awards, we’re certainly in for a surprise.

A New RPG from Obsidian

Obsidian

Obsidian Entertainment, the developers behind Fallout: New Vegas, will debut a new title at the awards show, and are currently teasing the heck out of it. There is even a countdown on the official website, complete with an ad that reads: “Brought to you by: Spacer’s Choice”.

Before Obsidian was acquired by Microsoft, the company was already working on a new RPG game that will be published by Private Division, a subsidiary of Take Two Interactive. It’s possible this new IP is what will be announced during The Game Awards.

Fornite

Epic Games has some pretty *epic* (sorry) things planned for The Game Awards. Keighley said fans of the battle royale game can expect an announcement, as a well as a “world premiere” at the show. Even more exciting, Epic’s Senior PR leader, Nick Chester, stressed that the announcement is not related to the Season 7 launch, which coincidentally, is also on Thursday.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey

Ancestors

Recently, developer Panache Digital Games confirmed its game Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey will be shown at The Game Awards. Ancestors has been in development since 2015, and the project being led by Patrice Desilets, creator of Assassin’s Creed. After its reveal at The Game Awards, Panache Digital Games said we can also expect an extended look at the gameplay on GameStop’s post-show livestream.

Teasers/Possible Announcements:

Death Stranding

Death Stranding

Games that are currently in development will be getting some new information at The Game Awards, and though it’s not really a teaser, Death Stranding could potentially be one of the games shown. The awards show has been previously been a platform that Hideo Kojima has used to premiere information for Death Stranding, and given Kojima and Keighley’s tight friendship, this year probably won’t be any different. Hopefully this time we’ll get some information that actually tells us what in the world this game is about.

Splinter Cell

Splinter Cell

There is an extremely high possibility that Ubisoft is gearing up to reveal a new Splinter Cell at the awards. On December 2, Keighley posted at new trailer to hype up the show, which featured already-released games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and God of War; and upcoming games like The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding, and…Splinter Cell?

In the trailer, viewers can catch a brief glimpse of of Sam Fisher around the fifty-four second mark, wearing his classic night vision goggles. The only issue is that a new Splinter Cell hasn’t been officially announced and it certainly hasn’t been released this year. It’s hard to believe Keighley would have included it in the video, if it wouldn’t make an appearance, in some capacity, during the show.

The Rumor Mill:

Mortal Kombat 11

As mentioned earlier, there will be ten new games announced at the awards show; and now a rumor has been circulating that one of those new games is Mortal Kombat 11. Let’s take this with a grain of salt- the rumor originated from a user of 4chan, who is supposedly a QA tester for Mortal Kombat 11. The heavily-detailed post was then picked up by ResetEra. In addition to the post mentioning that the game will be announced during the 2018 the Game Awards, it lists a few other interesting details, such as the game having a four-year development cycle and also has adventure and story mode.

No Shows:

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077

CD Projekt Red’s upcoming open-world title Cyperpunk 2077 will be a no-show at The Game Awards. The developer’s community lead Marcin Momot recently confirmed this on Twitter, saying “We’re looking forward to seeing all the reveals and announcements during this year’s @thegameawards, however, we’re not going to be showing anything there ourselves. We’ll share more details about @cyberpunkgame when we’re ready.”

The Last of Us Part II

On a similar note, Naughty Dog has also opted out of showing anything new for The Last of Us Part II during the show.

Rocksteady Studios’ New Project

Rocksteady Studios

Rocksteady Studios, the developers behind the acclaimed Batman: Arkham trilogy, recently announced they will not being their in-development title at The Game Awards on Thursday. The studio’s Game Director and co-founder, Sefton Hill said “when it’s ready to show, you’ll be the first to know. Spoiler: it’s not Superman

The Game Awards will take place on Thursday, December 6 in Los Angeles, and the event will be streamed live 5:30 pm PT/8:30pm ET.
