The Square Enix office in Osaka, Japan recently listed three new development job postings for positions related to an HD Kingdom Hearts project. First reported by website Gematsu, the listings are for a UI Designer, a Technical Artist, and an Effect Designer, all of which are in the First Development Division of Square Enix.
Square Enix hasn’t released any official news about what these jobs pertain to- whether it’s for Kingdom Hearts 4, a Switch port (though probably unlikely in the near future), or potential DLC content related to the upcoming expansion, Re:Mind. The strange use of the phrase “HD development” in the job descriptions, however, makes it seem like this project won’t be for another major game in the Kingdom Hearts series, but rather something to do with a possible remaster. But that doesn’t really shake out either, given that the major Kingdom Hearts games (even the lesser-played ones on Nintendo’s last-gen consoles) have already been remastered and bundled in HD for PS4 and Xbox One.
The listings are a head scratcher for sure, so you can check them for yourself here.
Kingdom Hearts III released at the beginning of 2019 to overall positive reviews. Many fans, however, especially those who’ve been long-time fans of the franchise and who’ve been waiting for the third major game for over a decade, found it to be underwhelming, with many important narrative threads left untied. In our own review, which you can read here, we found the game to be largely disappointing:
These unfortunate, re-imaginings of returning worlds, however, pales in comparison to the grievances found with the brand new worlds, specifically the individual stories being told within them that do nothing for the progression of the game.
Until we hear something official from Square Enix, the job postings for this mysterious new project will simply be left to speculation.
