Sony Warns PSN Name Changes Could Impact Game Save Data

Sony is currently in the process of rolling out a new feature for PlayStation Network users that will allow them to change their user IDs. It’s a change that many PlayStation users have been wanting for a long time, but now that the feature is in beta mode, Sony’s disclaimer has some user raising their eyebrows.

The above was originally posted on ResetEra, and the thread has other members sharing their own messages of caution from Sony. One member in particular, Azdoune, posted additional information they received before moving forward with the System Software Preview Program. In the thread, they post Sony’s disclaimer in full which states:

Important Information Before Changing Your Online ID:

  • Not all games and applications for PS4™, PS3™, PS Vita, and other PlayStation® systems support the Online ID change feature. If you change your Online ID:

  • You may lose access to content (including paid-for content) that you have acquired for your games, including content like add-ons and virtual currency.

  • You may lose your progress within games, including game saved data, leaderboard data and progress toward trophies.

  • Parts of your games and applications might not function properly, both online and offline.

  • Your previous Online ID(s) may remain visible to you and other players in some places.

It’s unknown how many users this update will negatively impact (if any), but it’s definitely a word of caution that should give some pause. The Preview Program ends in November, with the complete update available to PlayStation users sometime in 2019. Personally, though, I’d wait until Sony further addresses any complications the update could have on saved data, purchases, and game progress.
