Screen Gems is Turning Just Dance into a Movie
No, we’re not sure why.
Sony Pictures’ label Screen Gems has acquired the rights to develop a film based on Ubisoft’s extremely popular franchise Just Dance. Deadline first reported the news, revealing that multiple studios actually competed for the rights deal.
The development and production of the movie will be a joint effort between Ubisoft Film and Television and Olive Bride Entertainment. Jason Altmann and Margaret Boykin will head the project on Ubisoft Film and Television’s end, working alongside Jodi Hildebrand and Will Gluck from Olive Bridge Entertainment.
It will be interesting to see the original script that is written for the movie, given the lack of real characters and narrative throughout all of the games. Due to its immense popularity over the years, Just Dance now has over 120 million players of all ages, across various platforms and the numerous entries in the franchise.
The announcement of this movie seems like it’s just the beginning of the craze of dance video games being turned into movies. Last year, Konami, the developer behind the Metal Gear Solid games announced it was turning Dance Dance Revolution into a movie.
If you’re excited by this news, and really want to feel the *music* (sorry), the latest installment in the franchise, Just Dance 2019, is currently available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch.
