Rumor: A Metal Gear Solid Remake is in Development

A remake of PS1 classic Metal Gear Solid is currently in development for PS5 and PC, according to a popular YouTube technology channel.

In a new video, RedGamingTech mentions that they have heard from a source that Metal Gear Solid will receive a “full remake” and that “it’s going to blow minds” once it’s officially revealed. Additionally, Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and 4 are being ported to PC, but it isn’t clear if those games will make their way to PS5 as well. The video clarifies that the latter games will be ports of some kind and won’t be getting same remake treatment as the first game.

RedGamingTech says that the remake and ports are “definitely real,” but doesn’t know how far along they are in development, or if the Metal Gear Solid remake will come to PC at later date than the PS5 version. Their source has apparently been “pretty reliable in the past,” and while RedGamingTech fully discloses that their video game industry sources are limited, that have been accurate on a variety of PC and console hardware leaks.

After the very public and messy split between Metal Gear IP holder Konami and series creator Hideo Kojima, this seems like the best way for Metal Gear Solid to return. The first game in the series was revolutionary at the time, but as with most games released on the original PlayStation, it has aged rather poorly. Giving the game a complete overhaul, like Bluepoint Games is doing with Demon’s Souls or as Activision has done for Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, would allow a new generation of gamers to appreciate it. A totally new entry in the series would be met with skepticism, especially if Hideo Kojima isn’t involved. Konami already tried that with Metal Gear Survive, which didn’t fare well critically or commercially when it was released in 2018.
