Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Is Still Exclusive to PS5

Insomniac Games has reiterated that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will only be available on PS5. When a fan inquired on Twitter if the game would get a cross-generation release on PS4 and PS5, the studio replied by stating that it will be exclusive to Sony’s newest hardware, which launches in various territories worldwide between November 12 and November 19.

Sony and Insomniac have only discussed a PS5 release for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart since its reveal back in June. One of the game’s core mechanics involves sending players to different worlds at “near-instantaneous speeds,” which according to Insomniac Creative Director Marcus Smith, is made possible by the console’s solid-state drive. A PS4 release would likely require the game to be reworked in a very significant way.

The confirmation of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s PS5 exclusivity is good news for gamers who want Sony to focus completely on the future. There was a decent amount of disappointment in the PlayStation community when it was announced that titles such as Horizon Forbidden West and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will also come to PS4. While Sony’s move to keep making games for its gargantuan PS4 user base makes wise financial sense, some fear that the aforementioned titles could be held back by concessions that a cross-generation release may require.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will release in the PS5’s “launch window.”
