PS5 Showcase Announced for September 16
The PS5 is presumed to launch in roughly two months and it looks like we’re finally about to learn what Sony has in store for those who pick it up on day one.
In a post on the PlayStation Blog, the Japanese hardware giant announced that a digital showcase for the console will be streamed on Wednesday, September 16 at 1pm PDT, and will provide “one more look at some of the great games coming to PS5 at launch (and beyond!).” It will run for about 40 minutes, and will “feature updates on the latest titles from Worldwide Studios and our world-class development partners.”
Viewers will be able to tune in live on the PlayStation YouTube and Twitch channels.
The post mentions that the stream will show off games, but the obvious hope is that Sony will reveal the PS5’s price and release date to counter Microsoft’s recent Xbox announcements. Earlier this week, a leak prompted Microsoft to officially confirm the Xbox Series S, the lower-spec, digital-only alternative to the Xbox Series X, which will launch on November 10 for $299.99. A day later, the company also revealed that the Xbox Series X will launch on the same date for $499.99.
All PS5 pricing information is speculation at this point, but most expect the standard version to match the price of the Xbox Series X. The Digital Edition of the console has the same technical specifications as its disc-based sibling, so it will likely cost more than the Xbox Series S.
