Our Top 10 Favorite New Features of Marvel’s Spider-Man

With the release of the heavily-awaited Spider-Man game on the PS4 today, September 7th, we thought we would give you our top ten favorite new features that have set this game apart from its predecessors.

10. Upgraded Graphics

Starting us off, we have to mention the improvement of graphics. Powered by the PS4, we are given a new look at New York City, and it is unlike anything we’ve seen before. Instead of the clunky box-like buildings from Spiderman 2, or the dated cutscenes of the Amazing Spider-Man 2, we now have the full package. Each building and skyscraper looks incredibly realistic, as well as the daily life moments when you play as Peter Parker. We promise you that as you play, your eye will be catching tiny details that easily sets this game apart.

9. Experienced Spider-Man

Tired of the same coming-of-age storyline? We are too. Insomniac Games took the beginning storyline of Spider-Man and decided to age it an eight years later, allowing us to now play as a more skilled and mastered superhero. You now have developed allies and friends behind you, and in front, villains to challenge and disrupt the city of New York, making the entire game, all around more interesting and fun to dive into.

8. Peter Parker Character Development

As well as experience, in this new game, you get to play as both Spider-Man and Peter Parker. Whereas other incarnations have taken you more through the eyes of Spider-Man, this version changes it up a bit by making Peter just as important. Through this play-through, you get to understand Peter more while working through scientific puzzles when he is at his job. Further, by solving these puzzles, you get to unlock and build up your superhero suit, which leads us to…

7. Upgrading your Spidey-Suit

Everyone loves a good upgrading mechanism and Insomniac delivers. By working through scientific discoveries and challenges as Peter Parker, you can now customize your once basic suit, which comes in handy down the line of gameplay as villains increase in difficulty. This feature is a warm welcome to the once stagnant suit that you wore as you fought through the criminal waves in previous games.

6. Different Playable Characters

While in the same vein of character development for Peter Parker, we also get the ability to play as different characters. One that has already been released is the storyline of Mary Jane Watson who in this incarnation of the story is an Investigative Reporter at the Daily Bugle. While you play as these different characters, you get to use the specific strengths each have to offer, which means that while being Mary Jane, you are using your cunning abilities and general know-how to best the villains that are ahead of you. These storylines offer a chance to dive further into the world of Spider-Man, allowing you to look past Peter, if only for a moment.

5. Villians! Villians! And yes, more Villians!

Spider-Man games are usually packed full of great Spider-Man villains, but this new version seems to push the boundaries just a bit farther. With the appearance of Mr. Negative, Electro, Rhino, Scorpio and Vulture in just the E3 2017 gameplay footage, Insomniac Games has let us know that we are in store for a lot of villains. Further, by having Peter be so mature, we get to play in the universe were these villains have already been put behind bars by Spider-Man, so they are now out for blood.

4. Aerial Combat

Where most of the other Spider-Man games have had you land and then fight all the bad guys in a specific area, this game takes a dramatic leap into the air. Now as you battle foes, you can send your opponents into the air with punches or webs, and then follow them, finishing them off with aerial fighting combos or finishing web strikes. This combat mechanic is refreshing and fun, allowing you to feel like a superhero both in combat and web-slinging through the streets of the city.

3. Expert Polishing of Main Campaign

Insomniac Games is known for their single-player campaign storylines, and they deliver again. According to all reviews, the main storyline of Spider-Man is riveting and inventive. Each villain and sequence will challenge your combat ability while also intriguing your mind. While the side quests and stories may not be as polished, the main campaign will hold your attention for the majority of the game, making you excited for each plot twist.

2. Bigger World

In each new Spider-Man, the developers always try and push the edges of the world, showing you more and more of the sleepless city. And in Marvel’s Spider-Man, we are again given just that. Soar through eight large districts of New York City, which includes the usual real-life landmarks like the Empire State Building, along with the new and anticipated comic book landmarks like the Avengers Tower.

1. Web-Slinging Mechanics

Yes, you called it, our number one pick for the best new features of Spider-Man is the mechanics of web-slinging through NYC. What is a Spider-Man game without being able to cast your web and fly down the streets of New York? Insomniac knew this mechanic would make or break their game and thankfully they delivered by making Spider-Man flow and glide as effortlessly as he could if he were real. Through these mechanics, you are able to quickly learn the basics of slinging down Manhattan while also doing fun tricks and flips. The ‘feel’ of the web-slinging experience is real and according to all reviews, it will make you want to spend hours just exploring all that the world has to offer.

How close can you get to the ground without dying? What cool tricks can you perform within one leap? Play to find out!
