Though the PlayStation 5 was officially announced in April 2019, we have yet to see the full reveal of the next generation console, and there has been little information about it in terms of its hardware (except that it will still have a disc drive), the new dualshock controller, or the price. Although, at CES 2020, we did see the new logo, which is…groundbreaking and looks nothing like the PS4 logo.
Sarcasm aside, one of the only things we have seen so far in regard to the PS5 is its mysterious, upcoming launch title, Godfall.
Developed by Counterplay Games and published by Gearbox Software, Godfall is a new IP that was first revealed at the 2019 Game Awards and is a mouthful of a description. It’s described as a looter-slasher fantasy RPG that makes use of high-impact, third-person melee combat. Players will be able to hunt for loot, acquire sets of armor as they build their skills, and take on challenging but rewarding missions.
The reveal trailer of Godfall shows off weapons, armor, and a fantastical world that is bursting with sharp colors and rich hues. Players will be able to move through the game completely solo, or with a duo or three-player co-op; and while solo play is an option, enemies have (according to Counterplay Games) been built with co-op in mind.
This will be developer Counterplay Games’ second title after the strategy card game, Duelyst, released in 2016; and while Godfall shares some undeniable similarities with other major games like Destiny in its tone and looter-style of gameplay, Counterplay is aiming to provide a “fresh take on third-person combat by rewarding skill-based offensive gameplay”, where every strike you take matters. The game will also feed into players’ desire for powerful builds and weapons for your character.
A couple days ago, gameplay footage of Godfall leaked on Reddit, giving us our first look of the game in action. It has since been confirmed that the gameplay is real. However, it’s year-old PC footage that was used as part of an internal presentation.
Godfall will launch holiday 2020 alongside the PlayStation 5 and will also be coming to PC. Though it’s the first PS5 exclusive to be announced, there are also a handful of multi-platform games that will be coming to the console.
