Today in a “Forza Summer Update“, Turn10’s studio head Alan Hartman took time to reflect on the busy year, touching on the Forza Racing Championship and acknowledging Playground Games officially entering the Xbox family as a first-party developer. Hartman then went on to address not just where the Forza franchise has been in the last nine months, but to reflect on where the series is headed in the future.
That future includes some big changes, the most notable of them being the removal of prize crates in Forza Motorsport 7 and announcing there won’t be any paid tokens in the upcoming Forza Horizon 4.
In reference to the prize crates, Hartman and the team at Turn10 are more than aware they have been a source of controversy, despite the fact the developer has never charged money for them. “The overwhelming feedback has been that this system feels out of place in the game,” Hartman wrote. “After careful consideration, we have decided to completely remove prize crate from Forza Motorsport 7.”
In a similar vein, paid tokens, which have been part of previous games in the franchise, will not be part of Forza Motorsport 7.
While it’s not a change that will happen tomorrow, Hartman assures that the full removal of prize crates will be implemented before the year’s end. He addressed the complexity of removing them, while not disrupting any elements of Driver Gear, Mods and Badges. Because it’s such a detailed process, Hartman says that process will be completed “in the winter timeframe.” Steps have already been made to meet this winter deadline- with Turn10 unlocking over 100 previously locked “exclusive” cars, and by completely removing the cars from the prize crates.
