Overwatch League is due to start its second season soon, and it’s already becoming one of the most popular to watch. eSports are a relatively new phenomenon, but are taking over the gaming industry.
Blizzard Entertainment treated fans to the Overwatch League preview show, which you can watch in full below.
The schedule for the eSports competition has changed for 2019. In addition to the normal matches at the Blizzard Arena in L.A., matches will be played throughout the season. These will take place in cities around the world. Therefore, local fans will be able to attend matches.
We don’t know which games will take place, but it’s a nice gift to fans around the world. It also shows appreciation to the city-based backbone that’s supported the Overwatch League since its launch. We can also expect this to be norm for Season 3, and perhaps beyond.
Furthermore, we could even see new seasons involving cross-play on consoles. Jeff Kaplin, Overwatch game director has only confirmed that they’re in talks with Sony and Microsoft at the moment.
The Overwatch League also confirmed in July this year, that they were adding 8 new teams in 2019. However, only details regarding the owners of the new teams were announced.
We can also confirm that teams will play less frequently, even with the added teams. Each team will now play 28 matches instead of 40. This means players can have weeks off. Match start times will also change to accommodate players outside of the United States.
The first match of the 2019 season is set to be the rematch of last season’s grand finale. The London Spitfire will square up against Philadelphia Fusion. Boston and New York will clash immediately afterwards, and players should be fuelled by the traditional city-based rivalry. The first day will finish with the two Chinese teams, Hangzhou Spark and Shanghai Dragons.
You can view all the Week 1, Day 1-3 matches below, and find the rest of the schedule here. The games are due to start on Valentine’s Day (Feb 14) with a rematch of the Grand Final.
Tickets started to sell on December 12, 2018.
