Much like it did with Horizon Forbidden West, Sony has released a new “Insights” video for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart that provides some additional information for the game.
In the video, Insomniac Games Creative Director Marcus Smith outlines how the game will be taking advantage of the PS5’s SSD, DualSense controller, and 3D Audio.
The ability to jump from one world to another using dimensional rifts is a core mechanic in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and according to Smith, the feature “would not have been possible without the solid state drive of the PlayStation 5.” The SSD is faster than any consumer-grade drive on the market, and allows the developers at Insomniac “to build worlds and project players from one place to another in near-instantaneous speeds.” Smith also mentions that the SSD will allow the game to run with no loading screens.
In regard to the PS5’s DualSense controller, Smith says that it was “tailor-made for Ratchet & Clank weaponry.” The controller’s adaptive triggers make the game’s weapons “feel way more powerful” and help players “know how the weapon is behaving.” Smith uses the game’s Enforcer, which is similar to a double-barrel shotgun, as an example. “As you’re moving your finger down halfway, you can fire one barrel, if you pull it all the way down, you can fire both barrels, but all along the way you can feel the difference between the tension tightening up and it just makes all of our weapons much more immersive and powerful feeling.”
And finally, Smith explains how the game will utilize the 3D audio processor that is housed within the PS5. “This really is a fundamental difference between listening to a television set and going out into the middle of a forest,” Smith says. “It brings you into these worlds in a way that we’ve never been able to do before.”
While all of these features sound exciting, we don’t know quite yet when we’ll get to experience them ourselves. Sony and Insomniac Games have yet to provide any information on when Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be released.
