New Switch Model In The Works With OLED Display

Nintendo is planning to release a new, upgraded model of the Switch this holiday season. This news comes by way of a report from Bloomberg, who have heard from people familiar with these plans that the new model will feature an OLED display, as well as 4K support.

The new screen will be 7-inches, an upgrade over the 6.2-inch screen of the current Switch, and the 5.5-inch screen of the Switch Lite. Those with knowledge of the plans say that Samsung is going to start production of the displays in June, with a starting monthly target of around just under a million units.

In addition to being a better looking display thanks to the color contrast that OLED displays produce, the new Switch screen will use less battery and could potentially offer faster response time according to Yoshio Tamura, co-founder of display consultancy DSCC.

Although the screen is going to be bigger, it’s still going to put out a maximum 720p resolution. When docked, the console will be capable of outputting a full 4K resolution, putting it on par with their competitors Sony and Microsoft.

There have been rumors about a “Switch Pro” for a long time now, but this news is the most solid evidence we have the device is real and coming. While it’s debatable whether or not Nintendo needed to put out one seeing as how the current Switch is still doing very well in sales, having a more powerful device that can compete with the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X is a smart move in the long run. Plus it will almost certainly benefit the performance of games such as Pokémon Legends: Arceus and the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild when those games release. It’s only a matter of time now before Nintendo officially announces this new Switch themselves.
