New PS5 Update Improves Storage Options And More

The first major PlayStation 5 firmware update is releasing tomorrow, and it brings a number of improvements that are sure to make players happy.

After five months, players will finally be able to store (though not play) PS5 games on an external hard drive. Up until now, only PS4 games could be moved between the console’s internal and external storage, leaving those with too many PS5 games no choice but to delete and re-download games as needed. There’s still no update on when more internal storage can be added, so we’ll have to wait until some point in the future for that option to be added.

Another major feature coming with this update is the ability to do cross-generation Share Play. PS5 owners will be able to Share Play their games with PS4 owners, even it’s a PS5 game like Demon’s Souls. Game Base has also be improved and will now make it easier to swap between your Parties and Friends List for quicker communication and interaction.

If you hate how much time you have to waste waiting for game updates to download after they release, you’ll be happy to hear that you’ll now be able to pre-download game updates. After developers enable it for their game, you can download any updates that are set to come out prior to their release, that way you can start playing as soon as it’s officially out. If your PS5 is set to perform automatic downloads, the console will do this automatically while on or in rest mode.

The PlayStation App is also getting some new features over the next couple weeks. Some of these include being able to join PS5 multiplayer sessions through the app, manage your PS5 console storage, compare trophy collections with friends, and sort and filter through products in the PlayStation Store. There are more features listed on the PlayStation Blog page about the update, so be sure to check it out.

Last week we got some more big PlayStation news, with word that plans for a Days Gone sequel were denied by Sony, and that a remake of The Last of Us is in development at Naughty Dog.
