Updated: Mephisto is Coming to Heroes of the Storm

Update: Blizzard has officially confirmed that Mephisto will be the next character to be added to Heroes of the Storm. His spotlight video can be viewed below:

Original Story:

A bit of web code may have prematurely revealed the next Heroes of the Storm character.

The speculation started on Saturday, 8/18, when the game’s official Twitter account tweeted the following image:

Heroes of the Storm

It shows a magic rune being drawn, which led fans to believe that a Warcraft or Diablo character would be entering The Nexus next. Things got more interesting when someone analyzed the web code of the same tweet on the German Heroes Twitter account, and noticed the word “Mephisto” in the image’s “alt text” field:

I decided to check this out for myself, and came up with the same result when I inspected the image’s source code:

Heroes of the Storm

It’s also worth noting that @BlizzHeroesDE‘s version of the tweet, the only one that had the alt text reference to Mephisto, has since been deleted. Heroes players are taking the tweet’s deletion as proof that it revealed more than it should have.

Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, was last featured as a boss monster in Diablo II. He was one of three “Prime Evils,” the most powerful demons in the series’ lore. The other two were his brothers, Diablo and Baal.

No matter who the new Heroes of the Storm character is, they will probably be officially revealed this week during Blizzard’s stage show at gamescom in Cologne, Germany. The opening ceremony takes place at 10:30 – 11:15 GMT+2 on Wednesday, August 22nd. A full schedule can be viewed at Blizzard’s official gamescom site.

The most recently released character in Heroes of the Storm is World of Warcraft‘s Sally Whitemane, who functions as a healer in the game. She’s currently available for 15,000 in-game gold or 750 gems, which are purchased with real currency.
