Grand Theft Auto Remastered Trilogy Reportedly In Development

While Grand Theft Auto 6 is still years away from being released, it appears as if three classic games in the series will be coming back with a fresh coat of paint. According to a report from Kotaku, Rockstar is currently working on remastered versions of the series’ PS2-era entries, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Kotaku’s sources say that Scotland based studio Rockstar Dundee is the team in charge of the remastered games, with development entering its final stages. The current release plan is for the games to come out later this fall on a number of different platforms in one digital collection. These platforms include PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Google Stadia, and mobile phones. Consoles appear to be the main focus of development, so the PC, Stadia, and mobile releases may not come until next year.

The remasters are apparently being made using Epic’s Unreal Engine, with graphics that Kotaku’s sources say are a mix of “new and old graphics.” While the UI for the games will still have the same style as their original releases, they will be updated as well. No specifics about the gameplay were shared, but Kotaku has heard that the developers are trying to stay as true to the original games as possible.

Although nothing is confirmed yet, it’s possible that these remasters are the three unannounced projects that Take-Two mentioned in their recent earnings call. The gameplay for each of the older games has certainly aged, so hopefully these remasters are able to make them feel good and updated for the modern day, while still sticking to what made them so special in the first place. If this report turns out to be true, there will be plenty for GTA fans to enjoy this year with the return of three standout games from the franchise’s history, alongside the next-gen release of Grand Theft Auto V in November.
