Ghost of Tsushima Goes Gold Ahead of July 17 Release

Sucker Punch has announced via Twitter that its open world samurai action game, Ghost of Tsushima, has gone gold ahead of its release on July 17. In the video game industry, “going gold” means that a game has been sent to manufacturing so it can be pressed onto disc and shipped to retailers. It will be available in a variety of physical and digital configurations, although the rather impressive Collector’s Edition appears to be sold out pretty much everywhere.

The game was originally slated to release on June 26, but like the recently-released The Last of Us Part II, it was delayed in late April as COVID-19 forced studios worldwide to continue work on their games from home.

Ghost of Tsushima chronicles the journey of Jin Sakai, a samurai who must defend the Japanese island of Tsushima from Mongol invaders in the late 13th century. According to the description for the game’s story trailer, as Jin “embarks on an epic adventure for the freedom of Tsushima, he is forced to set aside samurai traditions and become a new kind of warrior.”

During a State of Play stream that aired last month, Sucker Punch revealed that Ghost of Tsushima will ship with a “samurai cinema” mode, which utilizes a black and white filter, film grain, and enhanced wind effects to make the game feel like a classic samurai film. Users will also have the ability to select a Japanese audio track to make the experience even more immersive.

Ghost of Tsushima is the last major first-party title that is scheduled to release on PS4 as Sony turns its focus to launching the PS5 later this year. During a stream on June 11, the company revealed the disc-based and digital versions of its next generation hardware and showcased 27 games that are coming to the system.
