Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut Announced

It’s been rumored for a bit, but today Sucker Punch officially announced Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, set to release for PS4 and PS5 on August 20. This new edition of the 2020 hit will include every piece of content ever released for the game, some new features, and most notably, an entirely new chapter of Jin’s story.

After hearing rumblings about a Mongol presence on the neighboring island of Iki, Jin travels to the island to find out what’s going on. Upon arriving, he gets entangled in events that have “deeply personal stakes” and will require him to “relive some traumatic moments from his past.” Sucker Punch didn’t reveal much more about the new chapter past this, but they did confirm that there will be new environments, characters, armor, mini-games, techniques, enemy types, and more. There will also be new trophies for the content set on Iki.

Although Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut is available on both PS4 and PS5, the newer console will be getting some special features unique to it. The Japanese voice-over is now lip-synced to the character’s facial animations, something Sucker Punch says is possible now thanks to the ability of the PS5 to render cinematics in real-time. As for the DualSense, the game will take advantage of the controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. When it comes to other technical aspects, the game will have 4K resolution options and target 60 FPS, enhancements for the console’s 3D audio, and “drastically improved” load times. Importantly, any saves from the PS4 version of the game will carry over to the PS5 version.

A host of other updates will be coming with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. More accessibility options will be available as well as target lock-on during combat. You can also now hide your quiver if you didn’t like seeing it all the time. The game’s multiplayer mode, Ghost of Tsushima: Legends will also be getting some new content, including a brand new mode. More details on this content is set to come at a later date, but all Legends updates will be free for players on both consoles.

When Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut comes out, it’ll cost $59.99 on PS4 and $69.99 on PS5. Pre-ordering at select retailers will get you a digital mini-soundtrack with songs from the original game and two songs from the new Iki content, and a digital art book with some pieces from the original game and 10 pieces of art from Iki Island. Pre-ordering on the PS Store anytime before it comes out will get you instant access to the PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima.

There are upgrade paths for the game. If you have the PS4 game and plan to upgrade to the PS4 version of Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, it will cost $20, with pre-orders available now. Starting August 20, if you have the PS4 version of Director’s Cut, you can upgrade to the PS5 version for $10. If you instead have the original version of Ghost of Tsushima and are upgrading to the PS5 version of Director’s Cut, it will cost $30.

I reviewed Ghost of Tsushima last year and thought it was amazing, saying that it was one of the PS4’s “strongest hits yet.” All this new content for the game is incredibly exciting and has me itching to jump back into the world that Sucker Punch masterfully brought to life.

In other PlayStation news, the company acquired Housemarque and Nixxes this week, adding two more developers to the team at PlayStation Studios. And it looks like Bluepoint Games may be next.
