Fortnite to Screen Christopher Nolan Films on June 26

Movie theaters are still closed down in many parts of the world due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Fortnite players will be able to watch a full-length Christopher Nolan film in the game’s Party Royale mode on Friday, June 26.

A post on the game’s official website provides the full schedule and additional details for the Movie Nite event. Inception, Batman Begins, and The Prestige will be aired on the island’s Big Screen, but which film is shown is dependent on the player’s home country. For example, players in the United States will be able to watch Inception, while those in the United Kingdom will see The Prestige instead. Players in select countries won’t be able to participate in the event, however, as Epic mentions that “Navigating distribution rights for different countries and languages for full movies is challenging.” The studio also notes that it is “looking at ways to increase global participation in the future.”

Movie Nite marks the second time that Epic and Nolan have collaborated in Fortnite. The second trailer for Tenet, Nolan’s upcoming science fiction thriller starring John David Washington, debuted in a similar event last month. The film was originally scheduled to release on July 17, but Warner Brothers delayed its release to July 31 as movie theaters begin to reopen in the wake of COVID-19.

Airing feature films in-game is the latest display of Fortnite’s monolithic presence in today’s gaming zeitgeist. Previously, the surging popularity of the battle royale title helped pressure Sony into allowing cross-platform play on the PS4.
