Epic Games has grabbed the crown with their purchase of Tonic Games Group, the company that developed the popular battle royale game Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. Epic made the announcement earlier today alongside Tonic Games Group, and it appears to be an acquisition that everyone involved is excited by.
“With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us,” said Tonic Games Group Co-Founder and CEO Dave Bailey. “They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team.” Paul Croft, Co-Founder and Chief Games Officer of Tonic Games Group echoes the same sentiment as Bailey. He notes that the team sees “tremendous potential in combining forces with Epic,” and that by working with one another, both companies will be able to “reach greater heights.”
Epic Games has been working towards building a metaverse thanks to their pop culture phenomenon Fortnite, and Tim Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Epic Games, looks forward to continuing this task with the help of Tonic Games Group. “It’s no secret that Epic is invested in building the metaverse and Tonic Games shares this goal. As Epic works to build this virtual future, we need great creative talent who know how to build powerful games, content and experiences.”
Mediatonic has an FAQ set up that answers a few questions that players may have regarding their purchase by Epic. They assure players that the game will remain on Steam and PSN, and will still come to both the Switch and Xbox as planned later this year. In addition, the team is looking forward to bringing features over to Fall Guys that both Rocket League and Fortnite have such as cross-play, account systems, and squad vs. squad modes.
And if there are any players worried that Mediatonic is going to start changing the kinds of games they make now that they are owned by Epic, the company made clear that there’s nothing to worry about. “We’re focused on creating games that empower our players, create joy, and bring people together to have fun, and we couldn’t be more excited about the opportunities ahead.”
Fall Guys has been a huge success ever since it released last summer. Tonic Games Group joining Epic Games is a move that’s sure to result in even greater success for the game over the coming months. And perhaps we’ll see even more fun crossover costumes from other forms of media for the adorable bean contestants to wear, similar to what we’ve seen in Fortnite.
