Microsoft had a showcase filled with big announcements, but one of the biggest ones was The Outer Worlds 2. The game is in development by its original creators, Obsidian Entertainment.
The announcement came in the form of a CG-teaser trailer that was filled with the first game’s signature humor. Starting off showing a peaceful looking planet, we then saw a powerful looking alien creature before transitioning into combat between humans. All the while, the trailer’s narrator described everything that was happening with an ironic twist, noting that the previous alien wasn’t actually in the game and that the slow-motion shots being used were done to increase pre-order numbers. The trailer reached its conclusion with a shot of the protagonist overlooking a vast expanse on the planet as the narrator said that the game’s story wasn’t done being written and that there was no gameplay ready to show.
Going to the Xbox Wire blog, the team teased a bit more about The Outer Worlds 2, revealing that it takes place in a new star system and features a new crew. The main cast of characters in the first game were well liked, with Parvati being one of the more popular characters. While it appears as if the original crew won’t be part of the new one, it remains to be seen if they will play a part in the sequel at all.
We shouldn’t expect the game to come out anytime soon though, nor should we expect to see any game footage in the near future, given how early in development The Outer Worlds 2 is. Obsidian is also still working on their new IP, Avowed which we still don’t know much about (though according to GamesBeat, it may not be out until 2023). Fingers crossed that it’s as good as the original though and improves on the areas where the first one faltered.
More news came out of Microsoft’s showcase today. The company finally gave us our first brief look at Starfield, debuted multiplayer for Halo Infinite, and announced A Plague Tale: Requiem, all of which are coming to Game Pass day one.
