The developers behind Life is Strange announced an original game in the Life is Strange universe called The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. Even before the DONTNOD Entertainment name appears in the reveal trailer, the team already gives fans a taste of the soft, atmospheric music and the art design that has become associated with Life is Strange.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit aims to channel everyone’s inner child. In the trailer, the tagline reminds us, “we’ve all flown spaceships to unexplored planets. We’ve all fought monsters and unleashed our superpowers, because we’ve all been children!”
The standalone story is focused on a young boy named Chris, who has a huge imagination and who, we get the sense, is an outsider amongst his classmates. There’s a bit of tension revealed in the trailer, in which Chris mentions his father’s drinking habits at breakfast, and in which he mentions that he misses his mother’s smile.
In a similar vein to Life is Strange, The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit looks to be showcasing strong familial themes and young characters coming of age. There’s not much information about what we can expect in terms of gameplay yet- whether it will be choice-based, or more focused on exploration. Hopefully there will be more news as to how (or if) this story will tie into Life is Strange 2, which was announced in May 2017.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit will be 100% free-to-play starting on June 26, and will be available on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4.
