In a talk with the PlayStation Blog today, Head of PlayStation Studios Herman Hulst announced that Bend Studio, the development team behind Days Gone, is working on a brand new IP.
While discussing the importance of new IP for PlayStation Studios, Hulst specifically mentioned the team and teased what their next project is.
“And you know, Bend Studio is working on a very exciting new IP that they’re very, very passionate about. They’re building on the deep open-world systems that they developed with Days Gone. So I’m really happy for Bend Studio.”
This is the first official confirmation we’ve gotten that Bend Studio is working on something brand new since reports came out earlier this year stating that their pitch for a Days Gone sequel was cancelled. They were said to have been put on a new Uncharted game before asking to be taken off and starting work on their own new IP. Given how widespread the reaction was to the report, it wouldn’t be too surprising if Hulst specifically mentioned them in this discussion to address the report and try to get fans excited for what they’re working on.
Whatever their new project ends up being, it’s almost certainly going to be something that pushes boundaries since that’s what Hulst desires from PlayStation Studios.
“Ultimately, I want PlayStation Studios to be fiercely daring, to take risks. I want us to continue to embrace the legacy of PlayStation, pushing the boundaries of gaming, keep making games that matter. Games that, probably, wouldn’t have been made anywhere else.”
Sony is known for their stellar selection of first-party titles that consistently garner critical acclaim from across the industry, so it’s only natural that the Hulst wants to uphold that legacy, while still trying new ideas to keep things fresh and exciting. It’s a shame that Days Gone isn’t getting a sequel given how well liked it was after release. Perhaps the franchise will return at some point in the future. For now we have whatever new title Bend Studio is working on to look forward to and get excited for.
Hulst’s talk with the PlayStation Blog also revealed that the company has delayed the new God of War to 2022, and that the game will be coming to PS4 and PS5.
