Cyberpunk 2077 Removed From PSN, Refunds Offered

In a post on the official PlayStation website, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it has pulled Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store. The move comes in the wake of widespread complaints regarding the game’s performance on base PS4 hardware, though significant bugs and glitches are present in all versions of the highly-anticipated RPG. The game will remain playable for those who purchased it before it was removed.

Additionally, SIE will be offering refunds on digital PS4 purchases of Cyberpunk 2077. A refund option was previously present in the post linked above, but it doesn’t appear on the page at the time of this writing. The Ask PlayStation Twitter account mentions that steps are being taken to rectify the issue.

On December 13, CD Projekt Red apologized for not showing how Cyberpunk 2077 performed on base last-gen hardware before its December 10 launch. The studio vowed to “improve the overall experience” of the game through series of patches, with two larger updates slated to release in January and February. Games media outlets were not provided with console review code prior to the game’s launch, which led to critics basing their impressions on the more capable PC version.

The statement also mentioned that anyone not satisfied with their purchase could request a refund if they didn’t want to wait for the planned updates. PlayStation and Xbox players who downloaded the game were directed to use the refund options of their respective digital storefronts. PSN and Microsoft Store purchases typically can’t be refunded if they’ve been downloaded, so the statement made it seem like CD Projekt worked with Sony and Microsoft to allow an exception for Cyberpunk 2077. This didn’t turn out to be the case, however, as many PS4 gamers reported that their refund requests were denied by PlayStation customer support. Xbox players have reported more mixed results in getting a refund for the game, so it remains to be seen if Microsoft follows Sony’s lead in bending its policies for this particular circumstance.

Cyberpunk 2077 was supposed to receive post-launch DLC, a multiplayer mode, and native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. All of that content has likely been put on the back burner for now, however, as CD Projekt Red turns its attention to fixing the base game. The Poland-based studio has stated that the cost of bringing the game up to par is “irrelevant.”
